The O-ring may be used in static applications or in dynamic applications where there is relative motion between the parts and the O-ring. Dynamic examples include rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinder pistons. Seals help prevent leakage, contain pressure, or exclude contamination where two systems join. Gaskets fill the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression.
